Woman Who Lives “Off the Grid” Threatened With Eviction – From Her Paid-For Home

Robin Speronis, a Florida woman who lives off the grid, is being threatened with losing her home due to her “alternative lifestyle”.

Last month, Robin’s story was featured on Fox 4 news in Florida. She does not have a refrigerator, oven, running water, or electricity.

Robin explains her decision to live off the grid:

“It was an interest in empowering myself, like we did when we got off the health care system. I wanted to look at every other part of my lifestyle and say, do I need this? Is this of value to me? If it went away tomorrow, what would I do? The more I got into it, the more exciting, the more of an adventure it became. My message was to create, so I created a happy place… a place where I get up, and I’m like this is beautiful.”

Most of what Robin owns was free, donated, or bought for next to nothing.

She cooks on a propane camping stove, and her electronics run on solar-charged batteries.

Robin gets her water from rain barrels. She uses a colloidal-silver generator to disinfect the rain water:

“I plug this into my inverter and my battery pack. This light will get brighter and brighter as silver micro particles are suspended in the water. It’s natures antibiotic,” she explains.

Unfortunately (but not surprisingly), after Robin was featured on the local news, authorities took notice: the day after the feature, Robin was slapped with a notice to vacate her property.

“A code enforcement officer came, knocked on the door then posts a placard that says uninhabitable property, do not enter.”

The notice cites international property maintenance code and states the property is unsafe to be lived in. Robin said code enforcement has never been inside her home and would have no idea if her property is safe.

The city code compliance manager told Fox 4 that he tagged the home because it doesn’t have running water or electricity – but neither is mentioned as a requirement in the code cited by the city on the notice.

Robin said she owns her home free and clear and her taxes are up to date.

“Putting a woman who lives by herself, who is a widow, out on the street without any due process of law is unfathomable. Where is the justice? Why did they choose me…because I was exercising my First Amendment rights of free speech in discussing living off the grid.”

Fox 4 reports that there has been an overwhelming show of support for Robin from people who have heard her story.

A local attorney has agreed to take Robin’s case for free. The City of Cape Coral says that if she can prove she can sustain herself and her home without electricity or water, both parties may be able to come to a solution. But isn’t the burden of proof on the accuser? It seems that the city should have to prove Robin’s lifestyle isn’t sustainable, not the other way around. Humans lived for thousands of years without modern conveniences like running water and electricity, and Amish families continue to thrive without either.

She is also a repeat offender who has shown she has no respect for the law.

Speronis’ time living on the grid hasn’t gone so well for her either. As reported by the Cape Coral Daily Breeze , in June 2011, she plead no content to larceny, and was sentenced to 10 years of state probation and ordered to pay $32,000 in restitution. In January 2012, she had her real estate license revoked following a second complaint that she had not returned a $3,500 deposit following a failed condo sale.

I really hope the government just collapses on itself. All I ever hear about the government is how much they shit on people and how much they make everyone miserable. I feel for the poor woman, she just wants to live her own way. Who the fuck do they think they are to tell even one of us how we must live? Nah, Fuck That Noise! Fuck your bullshit standards and codes! Get the fuck outta here with your preaching bullshit, government, and take your trashy low-life views of life with you. It’s as bad as the fucking religious shits who try to force their beliefs on you. After reading this, among several other stories, I want nothing to do with these conniving cunts anymore. They should just drop off the earth already.

we have people living in tents and bathing in rivers because of not being able to get a place. No work and people have to do what they have to do. They have kids living in the tents. RAin water can do a lot of things including flushing a toilet. Sorry the government or city or county or state is loosing out on money. But people have to survive as long as she pays her taxes and owns the house what business should it be of anyone else to say differently

  4. Michael Daum says:

Cape Coral city government sucks. It is dictated by privileged scoundrels whose only concern is $$$$$ and image. When they were informed they could not prevent fishing from public bridges they simply passed no parking rules within sensible walking distances to prevent access, especially for the older folks who mostly used them. There are ordinances prohibiting boats in driveways, hanging laundry, and many similar ridiculous infringements on personal freedoms.

  5. She found alternatives to live without the high cost of utilities. I guess she pissed them off because they couldn’t collect from her. Seems to me she was living like many do in Alaska. She would be so much better off than anyone else. If we lost power and all of those luxurious Utilities. Literally living off the land. And They think that’s bad!!! Kudos to her. Now all she has to do is go to the county and state her case that she is conserving energy and living at a lower cost than anyone. She owns her house and pays her taxes… Let her live in the quarters she wishes. She is showing a prime example of survival without those Coded services.

  6. Louis Cipher says:

I hope she wins. Government sticking their noses in places and not knowing exactly the situation.

  7. yam4uK says:

By your reaction, I’m not surprised… you do not read very well.

“but neither is mentioned as a requirement in the code cited by the city on the notice.”

  8. kurtbethel says:

This is nonsense. Do electrons have some special property if they come from burning coal instead of coming from a solar panel and battery? Do water molecules have special properties if the rain falls a hundred miles away and comes to you in a pipe instead of being collected at your home? Actually, they do. They went through a meter and so you have pay to ‘sustain’ some corporations to get what you could get without them if you didn’t have a sociopathic official to use force to make the corporations wealthy.

  9. rbodell says:

Amish have running water. She probably didn’t have a working toilet either.

If you live where there are codes you must obey them or you get trouble. They go for everybody.

I had a small hassle about my outhouse. My house is downhill from the septic tank so I have a composting toilet in the house. No problem there. It is a commercially manufactured and they didn’t even question it. It doesn’t work so good in the winter time, so I have an outhouse on top of the septic tank. It is a regular portable toilet with a hole cut in the tank so everything drops straight through into the septic tank.

When they tried to make me get rid of the outhouse, The code enforcement officer said that portable toilets were allowed but his concern was the hole in the tank. Since it was being used as an outhouse he used the outhouse law but he was not fully familiarized with it. I asked to hear the code. It said that outhouses that dumped into a pit were banned. Once he read that and familiarized himself with the code he said sorry, I was wrong, Have a nice day. No problem.

We need to be informed and to tell others about these things, including Agenda 21 (destruction of the United States), Codex Alimentarius (sp.?), and many other matters pushed by the UN, EU, and other supporters of NWO. Opponents of world government include people of almost all parties, social classes, financial standing, ethnicity, and religion. Use what legal means we have this coming election year, including the telephone, numbers for House and Senate, (202) 224-3121.

  11. Martha Cable says:

Amish DO have running water. They run their appliances off of gas, such as the refrigerator, stove, washer and water heater. The run other things with batteries which they charge with solar.
Most use only horse or mule drawn equipment and vehicles. They don’t waste money on TV’s, fancy clothes, jewelry, auto insurance, and much of the other crap that the “english”, which is what they call non-amish, buy. They are thrifty and most, not every last one, hardworking.

    • The Amish also run some of the most disgusting and brutal puppy mills in the country. Youtube has undercover videos that will turn your stomach and the USDA has also documented some of the worst offenses. The USDA files are online and can be accessed if you take the time to figure out their cumbersome system. Some of the offenses are documented with photos that will give you nightmares, so look early in the day and on an empty stomach.

  12. Rodney Mudge says:

” EAT THE RICH ” Then we will live in their houses. We need to throw these DESPOTS out in the streets.

    • Dana R. Casey says:

What does a rich person have to do with it and who says YOU get to live in their houses. Someone else will throw you out, take over and become rich while you whine about being poor but do nothing to change that fact. Besides “The Rich” are not a collective; they are individuals: some good, some bad, some not much of either. They are no more collectively evil than the poor or blacks or Hispanics or whites. Yours is a bigoted comment.

      • CitizenOf1Earth says:

The rich own the corporate state. They do not want you to live outside the system because they make money off it. You either live the way they demand, paying them money, or they will jail you and make money off you that way. This is why these types of activities are banned, fined, or criminalized. The rich are protecting their profits.

      • Shroom Duke says:

        OK then, “Eat the Capitalists”!!!

  13. And in this lifestyle she pays the least amount of taxes!

  14. Robert Truss says:

These city people must be Democrats! They are the only people that I know that will come in and run your life for you like it or not! They think they own everyone who doesn’t stand behind them.

  15. marblenecltr says:

Paula, “International Property Management Code” comes in at 1:25 of the video.

  16. Mark says:

Amish ppl have been living off the grid and no one has given them notice!! Apparently this city is run by people who have no common sense, respect or intelligents!!!

  17. Paula Hall says:

    international property maintenance code REALLY????

  18. marblenecltr says:

Did someone say, “INTERNATIONAL Property Maintenance Code?”

  19. The nanny staters just can’t leave anyone alone. Doing so would destroy their concept of existence.

  20. R3riate says:

She should be suing the CITY for Several Millions.
Especially for bullying if there are no codes to cite that are correct.

Then she can buy into a HIGH RISE luxury condo. At cape coral’s expense.

  21. Phil says:

They would freak out if they ever can to Alaska. There are many ppl living up here off the grid

  22. Don Talenti says:

Once again, government overreach adversely impacting citizens who have done nothing wrong. It’s getting time that we remind these jackasses that they are our employed servants, not our masters. By any means necessary.

    • I totally agree Don…by any means necessary! This has gotten way out of hand…I’m sick of our government and it’s so-called representatives!!! Out with the old and in with the new…fire the whole bunch! If this woman wants to live off the grid…so be it…it’s her right!

  23. leavemealone says:

‘The City of Cape Coral says that if she can prove she can sustain herself and her home without electricity or water, both parties may be able to come to a solution.’

Seems to me, she’s already proved it.

    • Carol Hanson says:

What’s so outrageous is that the burden of proof SHOULD be on them, and they have no evidence to even support such an accusation! This should never have gotten this far, and it shouldn’t cost her anything to defend herself against an unjustified attack.

    • Janie Dunn says:

I didn’t know we were “required” to purchase electricity, water AND healthcare.

      • rbodell says:

Only in areas with building and habitation codes. people do not like raw sewage running on to their property or into their water wells. That is why they move to areas where they won’t have that problem.

If you don’t want codes, move to the country or Alaska. You can have an outhouse almost everywhere and with only the exception of a few localities, they have only minimal property taxes and no sales tax at all.

For you loosers out there that want somebody else to work to feed you, Alaska has free medical care for kids and every year you get a check from the state as your cut of the money from the oil industry. Last year it was about 800 dollars I think.

    • rbodell says:

As usual the story is edited to LOOK like something totally different than what was the actual case.

As a follow up, she was required to hook up to sewer, however it was cut off for non payment. She even stated she was not going to pay and intended to continue using it.

  24. Warren says:

I read a book once that had the star wondering what MYOB stood for. Perhaps its time to bring about MYOB again for all the gov busybodies.

    • marty says:

it was a sci-fi story called “and then there were none”…where a spaceship lands on a planet with a totally functional anarchy instead of a government…was a great story…myob..means…mind your own business

  25. muggs37 says:

It’s called a POLICE STATE. (If you aren’t taking handouts from the government you must be a “terrorist” or a right-wing wacko)
