TEPCO is reporting that outdoor radiation levels have reached the highest levels so far recorded at Fukushima.
Radiation levels in an area where steel pipes connect the reactor buildings to a ventilation duct are so high, an exposed person would receive a radiation dose high enough to kill them in just 20 minutes. (source)
Quick off the mark in an attempt to allay fears of West Coast contamination, the chairperson of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Allison MacFarlane told Bloomberg:
take our poll - story continues belowCompleting this poll grants you access to DC Clothesline updates free of charge. You may opt out at anytime. You also agree to this site's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.âThe highest amount of radiation that will reach the U.S. is two orders of magnitude â 100 times â less than the drinking water standard, So, if you could drink the salt water, which you wonât be able to do, itâs still fairly low.â
Lets be clear on somethingâĤthere is NO safe dose of radiation. Radiation kills cells, this is why it is used in cancer treatment. Radiation causes cell mutationâĤthis is why ovaries and testicles are protected even for a one off x-ray, to prevent either sterility caused by the radiation or to prevent mutation of the germ cells that can cause teratogenesis (malformation) in future offspring.
Discharging tens of millions, if not billions of gallons of  contaminated water into the ocean is not safe, itâs not fine regardless of what the International Atomic Energy Commission says, and regardless of what the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission says.
Our government has jumped in to defend Japan against China over a few lumps of uninhabited rock. At the same time it refuses to defend its own citizens against continuous systemic poisoning caused by the inept handling of the Fukushima crisis. There is something VERY wrong here.
