A Palestinian baby receives a life-saving bone marrow treatment worth $55,000 from an Israeli pediatrician – but what this baby’s mother says in this video will shock you.
While waiting for her son’s treatment in the Israeli hospital, Raida says that she would be happy to see her son become a “shahid” – an Islamic martyr for Jerusalem.
“Like Arafat said? ‘A million shahids (martyrs) for Jerusalem?” asks the journalist Shlomi Eldar.
“More than a million. All of us are for Jerusalem. All of our people,” she replies. “All of us, not just a million, we’re all for Jerusalem. Do you understand?”
“Death is a natural thing for us. We’re not afraid to di[e],” Raida continues. From the smallest infant, even younger than Muhammad [her baby son,] to the oldest person, we’d all sacrifice ourselves for Jerusalem. We feel we have the right to it. … It’s heresy to say that Jerusalem isn’t ours.”
“Death is a normal thing for you?” asks Eldar. “Then how come you’re fighting over Muhammad’s life, if you say death is normal thing for you?”
Raida: “It’s normal, if he does die, what can I do about it? It’s a normal thing. My two daughters died in my arms while I was carrying them. So what? Did I die from that? It’s a normal thing.”
She admits that she mourned when her daughters died, but adds: “But what can I do? Thank Allah, praise God. Allah gave them to me, and Allah took them away from me. I can’t object to death. Every soul is destined to die, I could even die while we’re still talking. You don’t believe in death?”
Eldar: “No, to us, life is precious.”
In a most telling line, Raida says, “Life is precious, but not to us. We feel that life is nothing. Life isn’t worth a thing. That’s why we have suicide bombers. They’re not afraid to die. It’s natural. None of us fear death. Even our children. It’s natural to us.”
“I asked you before, after Muhammad recovers, would you let him become a shahid?” asks Eldar.
“Absolutely,” replies Raida.
“For what purpose?” he asks.
“If it’s for the sake of Jerusalem, it’s nothing to me,” she responds.
This is the attitude endemic among the Islamist martyrs, suicide bombers, and jihadi fighters.
But this story has a happy ending – because through the Israeli journalist and doctor’s generous gift, Raida’s son recovered and “she changed her mind on the meaning of life…. Going from the belief that ‘life means nothing’ to in the end valuing it as something ‘precious,’” Eldar told FOX News. Raida “said to me ‘why can’t we stick together to solve our problems? To find peace?’ It made me realize that both Palestinians and Israelis can change their minds about the future.’”
This video clip was taken from the documentary “Precious Life” filmed in 2010 – but it contains a valuable lesson for today’s violent and tumultuous Middle East: to solve the problem of radical and deadly ideas, one needs something good and true to replace it with: respect for life.
