Please pardon my caps, but what in the name of grandma’s fluffy buttered biscuits are these people supposed in charge of everything who claim they have it all “under control” actually doing?
Yeah. This has devolved into name calling. I said it. Morons. At least, that’s how our officials are portraying themselves to the nation and the world right now so when I see stories like the one I’m about to discuss below, it’s what I scream at the screen, along with “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrgghhh!”
We must be living in the movie Idiocracy because we aren’t just talking about the common cold here. We’re talking about the deadly, highly infectious Ebola virus — something that wouldn’t be so widespread and wouldn’t have murdered so many people at this point if it had been handled more appropriately from the get go.
The past few weeks have seen America’s first official case of Ebola wind up here unintentionally (as in, the infected person wasn’t among the people the American government keeps shipping over here who are already diagnosed with it before they get here). Thomas Eric Duncan came here undetected via plane. All the cases the government has intentionally brought here, also got here how? BY PLANE.
Still, the White House insists on not banning flights in a move that many have described as deadly political correctness. (Speaking of, I guess in this era of political correctness, this article’s title is probably considered “hate speech.”)
Our CDC Director somehow even found it within himself to say that if the U.S. did ban flights, it would “backfire” and more Americans would wind up with Ebola. Not sure how that works, considering the fact that so far flights — not boats or trains or open borders (that we know of) — are the only things that have brought Ebola here, but if that’s how the government wants to play their October frightfest, like a bad horror film written by a team of hacks who were previously fired from writing soap operas, then fine.
Fine, don’t ban flights from the Ebola-stricken West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone where some 4,000 people have already died in what is by far the biggest Ebola outbreak in the history of the disease on this Earth.
BUT AT LEAST TRY TO PUT ON A HAPPY FACE AND PRETEND that there are any kind of safety procedures at our airports at all.
Which there aren’t. At all.
CNN senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen recently returned with a cameraman and producer from Liberia where she was covering the outbreak. She returned to the U.S. through the Atlanta airport — the CDC’s backyard. Listen to what she says about her experience with the return screening procedures our government claims are so “rigorous” as she went through U.S. customs from Ebola-ridden Liberia (via CBS Atlanta):
“I expected that they were going to take my temperature, they were going to ask me lots of questions, but they didn’t,” Cohen said.
Cohen explained she told the airport official that she just came back from Liberia covering the Ebola outbreak.
“I said, ‘I’m a journalist. I’ve come back from Liberia, I was covering Ebola.’ And the gentleman who was helping me – the officer – he started to hand my passport back and said, ‘Welcome home,’ but instead said, ‘Wait a second, I got an email about passengers like you. Hold on a second.’”
Cohen continued: “And he went and conferred with someone and he didn’t know and they conferred with someone else. And in the end he said, ‘You need to watch yourself for signs of Ebola.’ And I said, ‘Well, what am I watching out for?’ and he couldn’t tell me.”
Cohen’s producer and photojournalist were also not told of the signs to check for.
“I was travelling with two colleagues – a photojournalist and a producer – and they weren’t told anything and they also said they were journalists who had been covering Ebola,” Cohen told HLN.
Cohen’s final thoughts on her experience?
“So we were all kind of shocked and pretty horrified at the lack of screening in U.S. airports.”
Shocked and pretty horrified. Neither of those emotions are synonyms for “safe” or “assured,” just by the way.
Oh, and good to know the TSA and customs workers were sent an “email” but couldn’t even tell passengers what Ebola symptoms the airport officials themselves should be looking out for in people coming into this country from Africa on these planes.
The thing is, most people are aware of the fact that even though the CDC claims they are taking the temperatures of 100% of people who attempt to leave West Africa via airports, just taking temperatures doesn’t really do much. It’s more of a token gesture than anything, considering that it can take up to 21 days for someone to start showing Ebola symptoms. Everyone knows that.
That is why a top virologist who has been working on Ebola treatments for two decades is openly calling the screenings at Liberia’s airports “useless” and a “disaster”.
But at least stopping people from traveling with Ebola if they have obvious symptoms of it (and when they are most infectious) is better than not doing anything at all — nothing, which is exactly what they did for months after Ebola first broke out in Africa, and is currently still what’s happening at U.S. airports where thousands of people still arrive on a weekly basis from West Africa.
On Monday Obama told reporters that officials are “going to be working on protocols to do additional passenger screenings both at the source and here in the United States.” Really? They’re “going to be working” on it? Sometime soon perhaps? It only took him that long to come to the conclusion that it might be a good idea to do that?
Maybe if people stopped coming here from “the source” it wouldn’t come here? I know, I know. That’s too much common sense.
(And these are the people we are supposed to trust when they start handing out fast-tracked Ebola vaccines? Yeah RIGHT.)
Now we have the nurse in Spain who is the first person to catch Ebola outside of Africa. She treated priest Garcia Viejo who had been flown into Spain with Ebola from Sierra Leone. He died on September 25th and she reportedly went “on holiday” straight away with her family and fell ill on September 30th. She wasn’t diagnosed with Ebola until October 6th. It should also be noted that she reportedly wore all requisite protective gear in the two (just two!) instances she came in contact with Viejo once to treat him (the first time) and to clean his hospital room after he died (the second time), and she had no known accidental exposure to the virus…so how exactly did she happen to get it, huh?
The real truth is this.
Bio-warfare scientists had been working in the Ebola hotzone countries on biowarfare aspects of the Ebola virus for years leading up to this horrible outbreak. Plenty of Africans feel this whole thing is a government conspiracy (story on the front page of the Liberian Daily Observer blaming it on the U.S. Department of Defense, anyone?)
A study done by the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases with Ebola in Monkeys published back in the mid-90s (abstract) showed that two of three control monkeys placed in cages 10 feet away from, and who did not have direct contact with, the purposefully Ebola-infected monkeys still got Ebola and died, leading these researchers to conclude:
“The exact mode of transmission to the control monkeys cannot be absolutely determined, although the pattern of pulmonary antigen staining in one of the control monkeys was virtually identical to that reported in experimental Ebola virus aerosol infection in rhesus monkeys, suggesting airborne transmission of the disease via infectious droplets…” [emphasis added]
That was nearly 20 years ago. So the people in charge already know all this, “You basically have to make out with an Ebola-infected person to get it,” talk is complete and utter nonsense. That would be why the CDC Director contradicted himself over Ebola’s transmission live on air.
Why? Was it just phenomenally bad reporting? All other media outlets including Reuters claim that Duncan had been downgraded to critical condition but was still fighting for his life.
Or is the real truth here that even if Duncan had died, there’s no way on God’s green and blue ball of life that the authorities and the establishment media would dare tell anyone?
Think about it. Faith in the system is already phenomenally low, mostly due to the complete comedy of errors this thing has become ever since Ebola “accidentally” got here. They do not want anyone to panic more than people already are at this point.
Why would they want to admit that the American medical establishment can’t save everyone from Ebola? How is that in the nation’s best (national security) interest?
Instead, they give us cutesy, publicized stunts like the Dallas County officials visiting Duncan’s quarantined family members in the apartment filled with Duncan’s Ebola-tainted effects — at the same time as geared up hazmat teams were there to finally clean it out and sanitize it more than a week after Duncan was rushed to the hospital with Ebola (and far past the amount of time the virus can live on surfaces) — without wearing any protective gear whatsoever as a public show of zero risk.
Well then, if there’s zero risk, why are these people still being quarantined??
It’s like our federal officials are playing with fire and running with scissors blindfolded at the same time their shoelaces are tied together down a dark hallway filled with broken glass, razor blades and a resurrected T-Rex from Jurassic Park. This situation should be downgraded from a b level horror film to a poorly dubbed anime cartoon.
In the meantime, regardless of the lies, hype and propaganda — because truly we will likely never know what’s really going on here, whether or not this is a giant distraction or a premeditated disaster or just a giant box of bureaucratic fail — the focus should be on staying healthy, boosting your immune system and being prepared.
