God-given freedoms are in fact “special privileges” granted by the state, says handout
A handout given to second grade children at a school in Fairfield, Connecticut states that “the government gives us rights,” a disturbing example of how kids are being miseducated about their constitutional freedoms in America.
Concerned parent Andrew Washburn posted the handout to his Facebook page after his eight-year-old daughter brought home the paper.
Entitled “Being a Good Citizen,” the handout tells children that “rights are special privileges the government gives you,” and that “the government gives us rights.”
According to the paper’s warped logic, “Because the government gives us rights, we have the duty to be good citizens.”
The handout also later states that “Someday you will be given the right to vote,” again implying that this is a right granted by government.

“You see, I know how important it is to get to children early in their lives and make sure they understand how it is in the world. Otherwise their impressionable minds might be corrupted by falsehoods like the idea that our rights come from our Creator and that we are born with them,” Washburn wrote on his Facebook page.
The bill of rights outlines and protects the constitutional freedoms of all Americans, but even that document cannot be said to confer rights, which are in fact God-given.
The Declaration of Independence clearly points to the fact that rights are not granted by government but are “endowed” by the creator.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Children being taught that government grants individual freedoms (and can therefore take them away on a whim) is not only completely inaccurate, it’s a disturbing insight into how educators are playing an unwitting role in brainwashing the next generation that government is God.
However, this is by no means the first time we’ve seen schools attempting to indoctrinate children with authoritarian propaganda.
Last year a concerned parent sent us a grammar test paper given to his 10-year-old which asked students to re-word the phrase, “The commands of government officials must be obeyed by all.”
