President Obama had the unique opportunity last week to chair the United Nations Leaders Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism. It was during this discussion between world leaders that Obama attempted to defend Islam by feebly stating that:
“Violent extremism is not unique to any one faith, so no one should ever be profiled or targeted simply because of their faith,” President Obama said.
While everyone at the table (and likely in the world) agreed with the basic sentiment, they also seemed surprised at the stunning amount of naiveté that the President of the USA (and the supposed leader of the Free World) was expressing. While no one believes that every Muslim is a terrorist, or that you have to be Muslim to be a terrorist… the VAST MAJORITY of terrorist attacks in the world today are carried out by MUSLIM Terrorists! Every leader at that table (apparently except for Obama) knows this, and almost everyone who is paying attention knows this.
British Prime Minister, David Cameron, attempted to (politely) explain to Obama that he was being incredibly naïve.
“Barack, you are quite right, that every religion has its extremists, but we have to be frank that the biggest problem we have today is the Islamist extremist violence that has given birth to ISIL, to Al Shabaab to Al Nusra, Al Qaeda and so many other groups,” Cameron replied. Cameron then referred to a comment that the Jordanian King had made. King Abdullah had previously stated that, “First and foremost, this is our fight. Muslim nations have to lead this fight.” Cameron agreed adding, “These people claim to act in the name of the Islamic religion. They don’t. I can say they don’t over and over again. You can say they don’t, but there is nothing more powerful than, for instance, what the king of Jordan has just said.”
“We need to challenge the extremist worldview right from the start. What does that mean? In Western countries it means we have to root out the extremists preachers that are poisoning the minds of young Muslims in our country. We have to build more integrated societies so young people feel they truly belong. And we have to make sure we don’t allow the incubation of an extremist worldview even before it gets to justifying violence.”
Cameron then went on to argue that there is a real difference between freedom of speech and the propagation of Islamic extremism “We’ve got to get it out of our schools. Get it out of our prisons. Get it out of our universities. I believe in freedom of speech. But freedom to hate is not the same thing.”
