The most popular theme park in Europe is Disneyland Paris. Approximately 10 million people visited the park in 2014. However, just two months after the Islamic jihad attacks in Paris that claimed 130 lives, a Muslim man and a woman considered to be his girlfriend were arrested as they arrived at the Disneyland hotel, after the man was found carrying two handguns, ammunition and a copy of the Quran.

The BBC reports:

The man, reportedly aged 28 and not known to security services, was also discovered with a copy of the Koran and a box of ammunition, police said.

His bag triggered metal detectors as he entered the New York Hotel at the much-visited theme park.

A knife was also found in the man’s rucksack.

“Anti-terrorist officers were called and he was immediately taken into custody,” said a source at Disneyland Paris. “He is thought to be from the Paris area. The police are trying to work out what his intentions were, and if they were linked to terrorism.”

Though the park was closed following the attacks in November, it remained open during the arrest on Thursday.

“During a routine security screening checkpoint at one of our hotels, weapons were discovered in a guest’s luggage through our X-ray machine,” spokesman Francois Banon said. “The police were immediately notified and the individual was arrested. We continue to work closely with the authorities and the safety and security of our guests and cast members is our utmost priority.”

The man said that he carried the weapons for his safety and preliminary investigation did not point to any sign of Islamic terrorism. However, we do know that the state-controlled media is unwilling to refer to Islamic terrorism as just that.

A woman who was thought to be the man’s girlfriend was also arrested, but released after it was determined that she was not an accomplice.

Though the woman was released, it’s being reported that police are continuing to search for a woman who is thought to have escaped just as she was about to be seized by security guards.

“A woman was arrested soon after the incident, but she was released after it became clear she was not the suspect involved,” said a police source. “We are still looking for the man’s companion.”
