A 12 year old girl filled out this survey after her 7th grade Spanish teacher handed it out in class at Monroe Middle School in Tampa, Florida.
Channel 5 Tampa talked to the girl’s mother, one of several parents who complained to the school:
Regina Stile is the mother of one of the students who received the form. “Her sexuality and all that has nothing to do with school,” Stile said…
“She has ADHD and apparently the teacher said there are some kids in this class that have ADHD and ADHD is a mental illness and that’s why she circled that,” Stile said. “To me ADHD is not a mental disability it’s something she has.”
So not only is the teacher teaching students they have “white privilege” but that ADHD is a mental disability? Sounds exactly like the type of individual you’d want discussing gender and sexual orientation with your 12 or 13-year-old kid.
The form was handed out to 7th and 8th graders. Although supposedly not required, the Spanish teacher claims the goal of this form is to teach her kids about “diversity and inequality”. The principal has started an investigation following numerous parent complaints, and the school district has released a statement that the handout was teacher-generated and not approved for release.
What exactly that survey has to do with learning middle school-level Spanish is unclear.
What’s next for the kids in that class? White privilege glasses?
