HILO (INTELLIHUB) — Experts warn that the descending lava lake inside of Kilauea’s chamber may eventually reach the water table and cause a major eruption that would fling 20,000 pound rocks out of the volcano for miles.
“We know the volcano is capable of doing this,” Charles Mandeville, volcano hazards coordinator for the USGS said. “We know it is a distinct possibility.”
“If it goes up, it will come down,” the volcanologist explained. “You don’t want to be underneath anything that weighs 10 tons when it’s coming out at 120 miles-per-hour.”
