House Speaker Nancy Pelosi showed her contempt for President Trump in the starkest of terms Tuesday night when she promptly ripped up his speech the moment he finished—and as the cameras were still focused on the dais.
While social media users roasted Pelosi for the move, saying it was a disgrace, petty, and disgusting, the White House took to Twitter to point out that it is “her legacy”:
“Speaker Pelosi just ripped up:
“One of our last surviving Tuskegee Airmen.
“The survival of a child born at 21 weeks.
“The mourning families of Rocky Jones and Kayla Mueller.
“A service member’s reunion with his family.”

In explaining her decision to reporters afterward, Pelosi said “It was the courteous thing to do considering the alternative.”

The Speaker called Trump’s speech a “manifesto of mistruths” in a statement afterward, saying it “should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people.”
